Redline Synthetic Oil

Postby BenjaminWoods1989 » Thu Sep 14, 2017 7:59 pm

Has anyone tried Red Line 10w30 full synthetic? I went to my local shop today to pick up oil and a filter for tomorrows oil change and couldn't find 10w30 full synthetic in anything BUT Red Line. The employees said they've heard great things about it and everyone is raving about how awesome Red Line is. Maybe it's the price they're raving about..$16.99 a quart!!! Reviews online seem pretty decent, but the price seems insane to me...unless each quart is going to boost my HP :+1 :+1 :+1 :+1 :+1 :+1 :+1
Anyone on here tried it? I ride an 05 YZF 600R and live in Maryland, any suggestions on a cheaper full synthetic?

I use Shell Rotella T6 5W-40. It's fully synthetic. The gallon goes for just over $21 at Wal-Mart. Pay no heed to the "diesel" tag; this oil is technically qualified as JASO-MA/MA2-compliant, meaning it is fit for use in wet-clutch motorcycles:

Hmm. The Shell Rotella T3 specs don't show JASO Mx, only DH2. In other words, it's not recommended for wet-clutch motorcycles. I know that T4, T5 and T6 do spec JASO MA/MA2 compliance. The large T4 bottle goes for 2/3 the cost of T6.

Correction, I'm running Rotella T Triple. Shows JASO DH2,MA.

from another forum:
My email to Shell:

Hi,

My 4 stroke street motorcycle requires oil that meets JASO MA
requirements/specifications. Does your Rotella T 15w40 and Rotella
T6 5W40 meet all JASO MA requirements/specifications? I see that you list
JASO MA on the container yet when I look at the list of oils certified by JASO
MA (attached), Rotella T or T6 is not on the list.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Al

Their response:

Dear Sir,

Both Rotella T 15w-40 and Rotella T6 5w-40 meet the performance
specifications for JASO MA and DH2. We have tested both oils and
warranty them for use in these applications. We do not, however
license these products through JASO.

Best Regards,

Shell Technical

The Rotella naming is confusing. Like Riceburner, I thought my 'T' (triple) was T3, but it's not.
And T3 is not 'triple protection'. But as far as I know, T3 is only available in 5 gal. buckets for fleet use.
Now to confuse things more, Rotella T triple has been rebranded as T4. :lol

Sorry for the accidental hijacking of the thread, Benjamin. The Redline is way too pricey when you take into account plenty of excellent full-synth alternatives from Amsoil, Castrol, Mobil, Shell and others at a lower price. Just make sure that the one you pick is recommended or certified as JASO-MA/MA2.

I agree with MadYZF. Redline is a good product, but far too expensive.
