Boots with replaceable soles?

Postby MadYZF » Tue Mar 07, 2017 11:13 pm

I'd appreciate recommendations on whether or not it makes sense to purchse sports/touring boots with replaceable soles and, if so, which model or series. I'm chewing through my two pairs rather quickly. Replacing soles for $30-40 dollars is starting to look like a bargain. So far I've only seen Sidi models but I'm sure they're plenty more out there.

Boy this is a great question. I need some street riding boots that can barely pass for when I go to the office. Race boots just don't cut it as proper office attire, though I suppose I could just carry office shoes with me in a tank bag or tail bag.

Anyway, subscribed!

I keep in the office one pair of regular shoes and another of athletic shoes for long walks. Saves me from the bag tax. I'm still looking around for a boot+sole system.

Daytonas should pass for work....if you want to wear boots all day.

Wouldn't a good shoe repair place be able to just replace the soles? Buddy had some A* soles replaced.

Assuming that the average mall cobbler would readily swap soles (I figure they would), the catch looks like which soles to replace them with. Most boots hace a pretty unique design. I'm checking individual boot providers for support.

The uppers are pretty worn out too. The stitching is starting to come undone on the back, above the heel. They're about 16 years old, and they have been worn a LOT. They are super comfortable though. I'll check out Daytonas! Thanks for the tip.

The soles probably won't be the same as the brand of boots, but you can get non-slip + oil resistant ones bonded to the old boots. I think they shave off the old sole and glue a fresh one on.

There's a YouTube video by alpinestars that shows how they go about their sole replacement process. Basically, they warm up the boot, tear off the sole, scrub and polish the boot, thoroughly apply adhesive to the sole and boot, put these together and then let it all sit long enough for the bond to cure. So far in my search I've only found alpinestars and SIDI to explicitly support sole replacement. I haven't checked smaller vendors yet.

There aren't (as far as I know) any street/race models with replaceable soles--it's only that Sidi and Alpinestars offer this service (but they won't do it on competing brands). If you live in a big city or a city with a big outdoors sports population, you might be able to find a shop that specifically does expert-level boot sole replacement. Or, as someone else said, you can find ye olde cobbler shop and hope that they have a suitable for motorcycle boots sole. However, their replacement method will involve grinding down the old soles flat and then gluing on the replacements (I've had this done once--it worked well).

I've also had Alpinestars refurbish a pair of boots and they (Alpinestars) were amazing: the boots were many years old but very lightly used. I had purchased them on close-out (I think from a local Cycle Gear) and even when I got them, the Alpinestars logo (it's a 3-D vinyl piece that was glued onto the shin guard) was coming loose, and then, even without much use, the soles started to come off (that was the real issue) and the material on the inside top of the cuffs was disintegrating. Alpinestars spruced everything up (sewing leather around the inside of the boot cuffs) and REPLACED the barely-worn soles and shipped them back to me for the whopping sum of...$0! That was last spring and since then, I bought a new (also on closeout, it's a theme with my m/c gear purchases) pair of Alpinestars SMX-5 WP (waterproof) boots from Jafrum ($179.95, sorry, last time I looked they only had a pair of size 14s and the SMX-6 WP runs about $280 or so)--my fourth pair of Alpinestars. I'm hoping to try them out tomorrow.

As for the office: really? You'd wear your boots around all day? No wonder you're wearing your soles out (unless it's carpeted) but I'd think you'd be much more comfortable in street shoes. As somebody already mentioned, just keep an appropriate for the office pair of shoes AT the office. It's a lot cheaper than replacing boots. If your boots are getting worn out just from riding, STOP dragging your soles and keep your feet inboards when you're leaned way over. Otherwise, WTF are you doing to them? :doh

As I mentioned, they're about 16 or so years old. I wear them because they are extremely comfortable, but their useful service life is about over. I would like to find another pair, but they're not made anymore. Hence the search.

I used to wear them around the office (which was carpeted). I work out of my house and have been for the last 5 years, so their use has really been more bike related as I'll wear a set of Toms around the house.

I found a used SIDI B2 size 11(45) pair with silver details on Craigslist for $40 and ordered replacement soles for $30 from a British vendor as no USA distributors appeared to have the size in stock. The best local cobbler I could find took care of the job for $30. A new B2 pair goes for $175, so I have my next sole replacement more than covered.
