Crazy Speedo Pegs and buzzes

Postby JAHMAHA420 » Tue Oct 31, 2017 12:16 pm

Over 200K on my first T-Cat and I've never seen this before... Yesterday on my new 25K kitty the speedometer needle was bouncing at various speeds between actual 40-90mph and then started pegging itself out momentarily way past the 180mph mark while emitting a loud buzzing alert. Pulled over checked speedo cable because I've broken a couple of those in the past 10 yrs, not the issue, not the Tach faults of 4K & 8K, obviously an electrical connection issue of unknown origin since hours of searching have yielded nothing. Anyone seen this happen and know the cause? BTW, she's ran perfect for the past 1500 miles and has yet to be modded being only a few weeks old, aside from removing the reflectors, rear fenders and 18 wheeler style blinkers.

There is nothing electrical about the speedo except the lights, which are not related.
You said you checked the cable, was it lubed? No tiny bits of wire sticking out anywhere? It doesn't have to be broken to cause the fault you are having.
If the cable is not dried or frayed, there are only 2 other parts, the speedo itself, and the drive gear at the front wheel.
If you have more than one of these bikes, I would try swapping parts around to narrow down the problem. I would start with the cable anyway. Who knows, some little bit stuck in the outer sheath could even give trouble.

Not a cable issue, when it occurs the speedo needle buries itself the way the tach needle does when jumping to 4 or 8 for its faults but also emits a loud buzzing alert. I did suspect the deleted running lights arcing to the upper fairing stay so relocated the wires to next to the plastics area to make sure but still a little bouncy on the needle on not so smooth roadways. I will inspect the rear wires that have unconnected plugs that normally go to my lighted top case that are wired into the rear LED blinkers, however the issue doesn't occur when the blind let's receive power. I also have an LED headlight (speedmetal) that had a burnt out high beam but just exchanged for new and will reinstall in the morning, but the last time that happened on the 200k bike it was wired for lights only with highbeam hi n lo to accommodate Bluetooth amp and stereo but never did what's occurring now.

I think the cable is binding near the gauge, winding up tension like a rubber band powered toy airplane, and then releasing, only to start again. Check it for frayed places, and then lube it and reinstall it.

That might explain the buzzing. The tension being released. Pull the whole cable and check as Res recommends.

Inside the speedo is plastic. I bet if you take it out its all chewed up. I lubricated mine with some silicone, but it still bounces a little.

ETA: I mean inside the speedo, you will need to remove the unit from the dash and carefully open it up. You will see the main entry gear rides on an aluminum clip, this is where the dissimilar materials get damaged.

Sorry, by buzzing I mean an audible electronic alert like ERRRRRRRRR. The speedo functions correctly from 0-140mph aside from the occasional 5 miles bounce deviation during not so smooth roadways. Will be inspecting this afternoon
