Gas smell 2006 YZF

Postby Joe C » Fri Apr 06, 2012 1:32 am

Can anyone tell me why I smell gas on my 2006 YZF?
I purchased it with just over 2000 miles but wonder if the gas smell is normal or if there is something wrong
Thank you

When are you smelling it? All the time, more when it's been sitting in the sun, when you park it?

Gas tank does vent when pressure inside reaches certain point, or you may have a leak in your fuel lines. If you remove your gas tank retaining bolts, carefully disconnect the green connector and lever the tank out you can check the fuel lines and filter and see if they're leaking.

I am smelling it now more since I've been riding it on sunny days. But when I come to a stop light it becomes stronger. Should I put carb cleaner in the tank or take it in for a carburator cleaner service?
I only have around 4K miles on it. I changed the oil around 3500 miles.
I checked around but don't see any gas leak

Is putting carb cleaner in the tank as good as pulling the carbs and manually cleaning? I never done mine since buyin the bike a year ago and adding 5000 miles.

Is is fumes venting from the tank, or fuel dripping out of the carb overflow?
It is normal to smell some vapor when the tank heats up.

Maybe that is the problem. The weather is hotter now so that's probably why I smell it more.
This is my first bike so I'm not sure if putting carb cleaner in the tank as good as pulling the carbs and manually cleaning.
Any advice?

A good fuel system additive won't hurt, but I am curious; is it running alright?

Most bikes don't have a carbon cannister like a car. There is no system for recirculating the fumes. Just a simple vent.
