Air box mod didnt work

Postby cgorges » Fri Mar 13, 2015 11:19 am

I have an 01 yzf600r w 12k miles that I picked up not running without any bodywork for a steal of $400. I sonic cleaned the carbs and re installed them and the bike fired right up. I took it for a ride and found some very bad spots in the powerband where it would bog and miss at wide open throttle at around 6k and 8-9k. I then did some research and did the airbox mod with the carb tube. I still have flat spots at the same rpm levels. The jets are stock. Any sugestions?

Sync the carbs, change the plugs...?

Brand new plugs. I dont have a vacuum sync tool but didnt mess with the butterflies when I took them apart and measured and they open at the same rate.

Would I benefit from a dynojet kit? the ait filter and exhaust are stock.

Do you have a streetfightered cat or a standard factory cat? Forgive me, but you post isn't exactly clear.

street fightered. I bought it already missing the body work and ram air ducts.

Can you tell us a little more about your set up? Do you know what the current carb settings are (A/Fscrews, pilot and jet sizes, etc.)? Also can you take a few pix of your modification to the airbox so we can understand what you did.

The jets are stock, air fuel screws are still capped. THis pic is not my bike but the intake set up is the same. THe ram air ducts are gone, its just the open holes through the frame and the under tank airbox and stock filter.

Would putting some sort of screen/grating over the hole help. FYI im not experianced in these mods. But that might help regulate the airflow a little more than having it wide open?

Just on outer hole. Having the hollow frame as a faux surge tank?

Outside losing the surge tanks which help with maintaining the airflow to the airbox. It sounds like you also are missing the vent hoses to the float box which aid in maintaining pressure throughout the system.

To condense that i feel like your engine is taking in too much air through its intake which is creating pressure in your carb bodies. Without figuring out a way to equalize that pressure in your float chamber. Or minimize the difference, you are going to starve for fuel at higher rpms, as your bike pulls in more air through its cycle, and as the bike itself reaches higher speeds and the air box is having air forced into it.

Hope that gives you insight into your problem.

As for the mrchanical end to rectify it you saw my poo idea of just dampening the intake  sorry im not the guy.

Thanks for the input Koteman. I feel like the original ram air system SHOULD produce more intake pressure that the open holes in the frame. And I have done that air box mod to equalize the intake pressure and the float bowl pressure by venting the float bowl pressure hose into the airbox near the stacks on the carb bodies.

I have a metal mesh over the holes in my frame and it made zero difference.

Can you take pictures? it would really help us understand exactly what and how you did the mod. results will differ greatly depending on how you did it.

I'll try to get some pics. DId anyone here add a dynojet kit? Ive used their kits on an 81 xs850 and 82 virago 920 i built along with a couple of quads and always had great results no matter what kind of intake or exhaust mods I did.

Time to bring closure to this thread. Yesterday I put in a dynojet stage one kit and now the bike runs great. Not stalling, no flat spots in the powerband just perfect smooth acceleration.

Re: Air box mod didnt work

Postby klcliburn » Wed Aug 05, 2015 1:15 am

Hey guys, I'm having an issue with my airbox mod on my street fighter cat too. I have stock jets and exhaust, I've tried the airbox mid with no luck, I've also tried the funnel out the front along with the tubes coming out each side where my ram air was hooked up. The bike stutters in low rpms, exhaust backfires some on deceleration and it tops out at about 90 with slow acceleration on the way to it after I hit 70. The a/f screws haven't been touched either. I'm planning on getting a jet kit next summer but was hoping and thinking there was a way to get this to run on stock parts for the rest of this summer. Any help????
